Miss Sherina Tan is currently based in Singapore as a full-time piano teacher, teaching advanced students up to diploma levels, as well as intermediate students and beginners as young as four years old. She began her piano teaching career since 2001.  In addition, she has taught class-piano to non-piano music majors at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as well as worked and performed as a piano accompanist.

Ms. Sherina Tan loves working with a wide variety of students from differing backgrounds and of all ages, enjoying immensely the cultivation of musical growth, interest and talent in students.  Agreeing with Sydney J. Harris that “the whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows”, Sherina’s teaching philosophy is whereby the teacher is not an absolute dictator.  Instead, the teacher is a reliable and friendly resource, sharing information and ideas, engaging students in active discussions and participation, guiding students ever closer towards their goals.  Therefore, it is a delight for Sherina to be able to work with such enthusiastic, bright and thinking students in the NTU Piano Ensemble, formed due to a great love and passion for music and the piano.

Education

Ms. Sherina Tan started learning the piano at the age of 5. Spending a great part of her childhood in Beijing, China, she was being taught by a graduate of Beijing Central Conservatory of Music. This led her to have a solid and sound technical foundation at the piano, while her love for piano and music were being cultivated.

In 2001, Ms. Sherina Tan graduated with a B.A. in Music and Mathematics, achieving High Honors in Music, from Wesleyan University, USA.  Furthermore, in recognition for her musical achievements at Wesleyan University, she was awarded the Leavell Memorial Prize.  Her academic excellence also made her a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

After her graduation, with interest in expanding her piano repertoire, as well as her love for travel, she studied piano performance for a year at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.

Her belief in continual learning and improvement spurred her to undertake graduated studies with Professor Catherine Kautsky starting 2004, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA.  During her course of study, she had the opportunity to play in a masterclass for reknown pianist Jeffrey Siegel.  In May 2006, she graduated with a Master of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Extra-musical Activity

Besides piano, Ms. Sherina Tan’s other musical love is for the Central Javanese gamelan.  She is currently a member of the National University of Singapore Singa Nglaras gamelan ensemble.  In addition, she is currently also learning the church organ under Father Christophe.  Sherina believes that varied musical experiences enable one to “think out of the box” musically.  Sherina’s passion, love and curiosity for music and life are supported by her strong beliefs in continual education and a positive attitude, always opening worlds of possibilities!

An educational system isn't worth a great deal if it teaches young people how to make a living but doesn't teach them how to make a life.”
